On February 3 and 4, the Grand Economic Circle of Indigenous Peoples and Quebec (GECIPQ) held the\u00a0Anchoring Today, Building Tomorrow<\/a>\u00a0event\u00a0at the Hotel Le Bonne Entente in Quebec City!\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

This event brought together more than\u00a0<\/span>300 participants, including Indigenous and Quebec economic, political, and business\u00a0players<\/span><\/b>. The extensive program featured\u00a0<\/span>nearly 30\u00a0panelists and speakers\u00a0<\/span><\/b>who\u00a0took stock of\u00a0economic reconciliation in Quebec\u00a0by\u00a0reviewing successes and lessons learned in recent years,\u00a0identifying\u00a0ongoing challenges, and collectively reflecting on priorities and\u00a0objectives\u00a0for the future<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

FEBRUARY 3 | ANCHORING TODAY<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

The first day allowed us to assess the progress made in\u00a0terms of\u00a0economic reconciliation between Indigenous Peoples and Quebec, as\u00a0observed\u00a0by the Grand Economic Circle since 2021. During the morning\u2019s review, three key findings\u00a0emerged:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  • More than 110 businesses and organizations<\/span><\/b>\u00a0have made\u00a0<\/span>over 230 commitments<\/span><\/b>\u00a0to economic reconciliation\u00a0as part of\u00a0the movement since its launch.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
      \n
    • Eight events<\/span><\/b>\u00a0have been organized across Quebec, including a launch event, five regional economic circles, an annual\u00a0gathering, and the current event.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
        \n
      • More than half<\/span><\/b>\u00a0of the participating organizations have\u00a0observed\u00a0a tangible improvement in\u00a0terms of\u00a0relations and\u00a0trusting atmosphere\u00a0with Indigenous communities.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        • Nearly two-thirds<\/span><\/b>\u00a0of the participating organizations plan to strengthen or formalize their partnerships with Indigenous communities and businesses,\u00a0demonstrating\u00a0a clear commitment to building long-term relationships.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          The day continued with a panel discussion featuring former\u00a0hosts\u00a0of Regional Economic Circles. The discussions highlighted the tangible outcomes of these major events: lasting collaborations, mutual learning, but also the very\u00a0real challenges\u00a0related to\u00a0transforming commitments into long-term partnerships.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

          At 1:30 p.m., a panel of\u00a0players\u00a0involved in economic reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples shared their field observations and successful projects. Through concrete examples, they revealed the challenges\u00a0encountered, the winning approaches, and the lessons learned for transforming commitments into sustainable partnerships.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

          Finally, a panel including representatives from Hydro-Qu\u00e9bec, Alto, and the\u00a0Commission de la construction du Qu\u00e9bec\u00a0(CCQ) addressed a key issue: how to integrate economic reconciliation into organizational strategy.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

          The day concluded with an evening banquet hosted by TELUS.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

          FEBRUARY 4<\/span>\u00a0|\u00a0<\/span>BUILDING TOMORROW<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span> <\/strong><\/h2>\n

          The second day was decidedly forward-looking. The Honourable Mich\u00e8le Audette, Senator,\u00a0<\/span>opened the event with a conference marked by sincerity, drawing on her culture and lived experience while establishing essential connections with the historical context and the place of First Nations in Quebec\u2019s economy.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

          The morning continued with the\u00a0Indigenous Women\u2019s Leadership\u00a0panel, which featured\u00a0Marie St-Gelais, Monika\u00a0Ille, Catherine Boivin and Tammy Beauvais, four women who are transforming the socioeconomic and entrepreneurial landscape of First Nations.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

          The morning of February 4 concluded with a panel that offered a cross-disciplinary perspective on current realities, persistent challenges, and growth drivers\u00a0that shape\u00a0the socioeconomic future of the communities. By presenting promising projects in education, tourism, housing, economic development and entrepreneurship, the discussions clarified how Quebec businesses and organizations can collaborate concretely and respectfully to support First Nations\u00a0objectives\u00a0and actively contribute to economic reconciliation.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

          At 1:00\u00a0p.m., participants were\u00a0offered\u00a0a presentation on procurement as a\u00a0<\/span>strategic\u00a0lever\u00a0for economic reconciliation<\/span><\/b>. Specifically, it aimed to provide Quebec organizations with\u00a0avenues\u00a0for collaborating on procurement with Indigenous organizations.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

          The day concluded with a highly\u00a0anticipated\u00a0exchange between the Chief of the Assembly of First Nations Quebec-Labrador,\u00a0<\/span>Francis\u00a0Verreault-Paul<\/span><\/b>, and his predecessor,\u00a0<\/span>Ghislain Picard<\/span><\/b>,\u00a0who is\u00a0now an associate professor at HEC Montr\u00e9al.\u00a0Together, they had an inspiring\u00a0discussion that strongly reaffirmed the First Nations\u2019 determination to assert\u00a0their<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>place in Quebec\u2019s economy, placing economic and legislative reconciliation at the heart of<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>transformative efforts.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
